Citybus 2500 collection
Welcome
Hi, I'm Paul McNamara and I am based in the UK.

This collection features photos of buses, trollybuses and trams from my travels around Europe and the Far East.

There are also the odd UK pages of things that interest me thrown in, such as former Far East vehicles and buses from the Scania Omni range.

A small collection of European trains appears at the end.

If you would like to contact me, please do but please do so in English. I hope you enjoy the photos.

Belgium - Antwerp 2006 (35 images)

A collection of De Lijn (and contractors) buses and trams in Antwerp taken in July 2006.

Belgium - Antwerp and Brussels Sightseeing (43 images)

A selection of shots of the three operators providing Sightseeing Tours in Antwerp and Brussels. Visits were July 2006 and August 2009. Featured are former Berlin MANs, Volvo B7L / East Lancs and Volvo B9TL / Unvi.

Belgium - Brussels 2006/2007 (101 images)

A collection of STIB (or MIVB if you prefer) and De Lijn buses and trams in the Brussels area. Not surprisingly, there are a lot of Van Hools. The visits were July 2006 and November 2007.

A special service linking various museums operates and this operated by vintage buses, with examples from 1960 and 1973 when I sampled it.

Also noted were a First Aberdeen coach and what looked like an abandoned FLF.

Czech Republic - Prague 2009 (198 images)

A collection of buses and trams from Prague and the surrounding area, taken in February 2009.

Old Karosa buses still make up a significant part of the fleet, although Irisbus obviously feature with newer models along with the odd German heavyweight.

Denmark - Busbevarelse (16 images) New

I was lucky enough to visit the site of the busbevarelse (historic bus) collection near Copenhagen in June 2009.

The collection is slowly growing and features a varied collection of Danish vehicles, including some brought back to the country from Estonia and Poland!!

The website for the collection is www.busbevarelse.dk

Denmark - Copenhagen 2005/2006 (138 images)

A selection of photos from the Greater Copenhagen area (HUR Trafik) taken in March and June 2005 and August 2006.

These include City Trafik, several smaller concerns as well as Arriva and Connex.

Denmark - Copenhagen 2007/2008 (200 images)

Another collection of photos from Copenhagen, this time covering various trips in March 2007 and also May and November 2008.

Although Arriva purchased the operations of Veolia, they have suffered quite heavy contract losses since to both existing and new operators such as Concordia Bus.

A feature of this collection is the ferries operated by Arriva.

Denmark - Copenhagen 2009 (149 images) New

A couple of visits to the Greater Copenhagen area in June and November 2009.

Arriva continue to replace the DABs as required under the contract conditions inherited from Veolia. Both Scania Omnilink and Volvo B7RLE are entering service. Another chunk of DABs will go when Arriva loose several large contracts in December 2009 so they are on borrowed time.

Also in the Arriva fleet are 11 electric minibuses for a new City Loop service around Copenhagen City Centre.

Denmark - Copenhagen Sightseeing (29 images) Updated

A collection of photos of the Sightseeing fleet of Auto Paaske, Copenhagen taken in during various visits between 2005 and 2009. With the exception of the abandoned Fleetline, all are ex Berlin MAN SD200.

Denmark - Fyn 2006 (33 images)

A collection of photos from the Fyns AMT area, which is one of the smaller Danish Transport Authorities. Visited in August 2006.

Most regional buses are provided by Arriva, with the citybuses in Odense provide by the Local Authority owned undertaking.

Denmark - Fyn 2008 (35 images)

An updated collection for Fyn following a visit in May 2008. Fyn Bus have introduced a new image since my last visit.

Denmark - Fyn 2009 (61 images) New

A November 2009 visit to Fyn, covering locations such as Odense, Middelfart, Svendborg and Nyborg.

The local services in Odense are now in the hands of Tide Bus and the new Fynbus image is quite widespread.

Denmark - Midttrafik 2007/2008 (221 images)

A collection of photos from the new Midttrafik area taken during visits in May 2007 and February/May 2008.

The area includes Århus, Randers and Silkeborg. Between my visits Veolia Danmark won many contracts from Wulff Bus (owned by Arriva) but was then itself acquired by Arriva so they now have a large presence in the area. However, true to form Arriva started to loose tenders to other operators. As such some vehicles may appear in this collection more than once with different operators or different fleetnumbers within Arriva.

At Århus Sporveje a large number of Solaris have been obtained to satisfy new contracts which sadly means the DABs have now gone.

Denmark - Midttrafik 2009 (152 images) New

A couple of visits to the Midttrafik area in June and November 2009. Locations included are Århus, Randers, Silkeborg, Skanderborg, Viborg, Skive, Holtebro and Herning.

Arriva operate across the area, having gained most of the Midttrafik operations originally through the purchase of Wulff Bus, but again after they had lost all the contracts through their purchase of Veolia.

Many other operators also feature and there are still older vehicles operating, particularly in the west of the region.

Denmark - North Jutland 2005 (32 images)

A collection from the North Jutland (NT - Nordjylland Trafikselskab) region visited in June 2005.

Result in this section was finding the Svend E Sørensen Leyland-DAB in service, covering for the usual B10M. Very nice machine with TL11 engine and semi-auto gearbox.

Arriva, Connex and City Trafik all operate in the town of Aalborg.

Denmark - North Jutland 2008 (26 images)

A further collection from the North Jutland (NT - Nordjylland Trafikselskab) region following a second visit in May 2008.

Denmark - Sydtrafik 2007 (24 images)

A visit to the newly created Sydtrafik area in May 2007.

This covers part of the area previously administered by Vejle amts and Ribe amts amongst others.

Denmark - Sydtrafik 2009 (98 images) New

A collection featuring a November 2009 visit to the Sydtrafik area, covering towns such as Esbjerg, Fredericia, Kolding and Vejle.

Sydtrafik is a recently created traffic area, so the corporate image is not yet widespread, allowing buses to be seen in old liveries.

Arriva have lost the Esbjerg contract since my last visit and continue to use the Wulff Bus name in Vejle rather than their own.

Esbjerg station was closed for track remodelling whilst I was there, so there were rail replacement services operating. DSB hired in top end coaches to cover their services, Arriva hired in old Leyland and DAB service buses up to 28 years old. . . .

Denmark - Vejle amts 2006 (31 images)

A collection of photos taken in August 2006 from the Vejle traffic area.

Denmark - Århus 2005/2006 (89 images)

A selection of photos of different operators from the Århus area (Århus AMT) taken in June 2005 and August 2006.

Århus Sporveje is one of only two Local Govt. owned bus companies in Denmark and this is certainly apparent in the image of the company and the rather strange current vehicle purchasing policy!

Eire - Dublin 2008 (108 images)

A small collection from two brief visits in January and December 2008.

Captured are some of the new Volvo B12B / Jonckheere and Mercedes Citaro with First Aircoach as well as new Volvo B9TL / Wright with Bus Átha Cliath.

A collection of various operators in Tallinn, the main one being TAK. Most of the buses here are imports from Denmark, Finland, Holland, Norway and Sweden.

There are also Skoda trollybuses and a few trams and not forgetting the buses that pull passenger trailers.

The visit was in March 2009.

Estonia - Tartu 2009 (70 images)

Tartu is the second biggest city in Estonia and again the city fleet is made of of second hand purchases from Denmark, Finland, Holland, Norway and Sweden although there are new buses in the region.

A wintery March 2009 is when the visit took place.

Finland - Helsinki 2009 (175 images)

A collection featuring a visit to Helsinki in March 2009.

The varied bus scene in and around Helsinki is quite varied with several companies operating in their own liveries.

France - Île-de-France 2005 (54 images)

A collection of buses from the Île-de-France (greater Paris) area taken in August 2005.

Noteable are a number of RATP vehicles that have now received 'normal' registrations replacing their RATP ones.

L'Open Tour have a fleet of 12 Volvo B10M / East Lancs and 16 Neoplan N4426.

Photos taken in August 2005.

Germany - Berlin 2006/2007 (237 images)

A collection of photos from Berlin taken in May 2006, May and September 2007. Most are of the main operator BVG, but there are a small number of private operators who provide services on behalf of BVG.

BVG operate around 400 MAN double deckers, the oldest of which date from 1987. After a gap of 10 years, they are once again buying double decks with 207 new Lion's City double decks now in service and another 103 expected.

The local museum (www.traditionsbus.de) are involved in the operation of route 218, with one bus allocated each day. I found two different vehicles used which was pretty good going. The route is also very picturesque, well worth a ride.

Germany - Berlin and Brandenburg 2008/2009 (151 images)

Another collection from Berlin covering visits in September 2008 and October 2009.

A couple of visits beyond Berlin into Brandenburg feature, including trollybuses in Eberswalde as well as a couple of Optare Solos.

The MAN SD202 is due for retirement from BVG in November 2009, so my latest visit was my last opportunity to see them.

Germany - Berlin and Potsdam Sightseeing (65 images)

A collection featuring the Sightseeing buses of Berlin and Potsdam, taken between 2006 and 2009.

Some of the weather was most not open-top friendly.

Germany - Berlin City Tour Depot 2008 (14 images)

A few odds and sods from a visit to the yard of Berlin City Tour in September 2008. There are various buses there, with BCT carrying out lots of outside work.

Amongst them was a Routemaster, a Lodekka and the first Scania Omnicity double deck which is not likely to come to the UK!!

Germany - Berlin Historicbus Running Day 2007 (54 images)

On Saturday 12th May 2007, the 5th annual historic vehicle running day was held in Berlin when Traditionsbus Berlin fielded 15 vintage buses onto route M45 between Berlin (Zoo) and Spandau (Johannesstift). These operated normal departures on which normal VBB tickets were required. BVG provided less buses than normal, but did provide varity from the usual bendis with a Citaro L and showing the future with a hydrogen powered MAN NL343.

Ten buses are owned by traditionsbus, with 5 visitors. Other buses, not licenced for carrying passengers, also shadowed the route.

Buses displayed route numbers 54, 54E and AS1 as these had been the route number for trams and buses on this line until 1991, when the route became the 145. In 2006 the route became part of the Metrobus high frequency network and was re-numbered M45.

Despite the sometimes torrential rain, this was a very enjoyable event.

Germany - Berlin Historicbus Running Day 2009 (46 images)

This years event took take place on 10th October based in the district of Kurfürstendamm operating as additional buses on BVG bus lines M19, M29, M46 and 249.

The theme was 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall and included several guest appearances of historic buses from other parts of Germany. This was to replicate the situation in 1989 when a huge upsurge in passengers required BVG to hire buses in to meet demand.

In total 27 additional buses were in operation on standard BVG bus lines - a fantastic achievement for an enthusiasts group.

Germany - Berlin Historicbus Weekend 2008 (60 images)

A collection of photos covering various historic events in Berlin over the weekend 13th/14th September 2008.

Traditionsbus had their annual running event over both days and this was tied in with the 700th Anniversary celebrations of the district of Heiligensee. Traditionsbus operated scheduled extras on services 124, 133 and 324, in some cases trippling the regular service to carry visitors to the event. There was also a newly restored former Berlin tram on display at the former tram depot in Heiligensee.

On Sunday 14th BVG operated a vintage underground train between Tegel and Wedding connected with this event.

Also on Sunday 14th, the Technical Museum storage facility was open and the shuttle service was provided by historic buses, including a former Southend PD3!!

Germany - Hamburg 2006 (267 images)

Germany - Hannover 2006 (62 images)

A day trip to Hannover in April 2006.

The main city services are operated by Ûstra, most of whose fleet appears to be made up of these rather stylish Mercedes Benz Citaro. This version probably wouldn't go amiss as being the standard version!

Regio Bus and a few other smaller ops feature on country services.

HyFLEET:CUTE Project (103 images)

A collection made up of vehicles that are part of the Hyfleet:CUTE project.

The European Commission allocated 18.5€ million to the CUTE (Clean Urban Transport for Europe) demonstration project to support 9 European cities in introducing hydrogen into their public transport system : Amsterdam (Netherlands), Barcelona (Spain), Hamburg (Germany), London (United Kingdom), Luxembourg, Madrid (Spain), Porto (Portugal), Stockholm (Sweden) and Stuttgart (Germany). Reykjavik (Iceland) is also taking part in the project, but as part of the ECTOS project.

30 fuel-cell powered buses (3 for each city), running on locally produced and refilled hydrogen, should prove that zero emission public transport is possible today.

See www.fuel-cell-bus-club.com for more information.

The European experiment was originally for two years, but continued for an additional year as HyFLEET:CUTE without Porto, Stockholm or Stuttgart. The Stockholm and Stuttgart vehicles passed to Hamburg.

Perth (Australia) and Beijing (China) are also conducting separate trials with three Fuel Cell Citaros each.

During 2006, MAN joined the HyFLEET:CUTE project with the delivery of 4 hydrogen fuelled NL343 buses to BVG, Berlin, with 10 more to follow.

See www.global-hydrogen-bus-platform.com

The one year extension of the original project has now ended but Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Hamburg and London are commited to continuing research into hydrogen / fuel cell technology. Amsterdam and Hamburg continue to operate their Citaros.

Thanks go to all the people in many countries that are connected to this project who have assisted me in compiling this collection.

Various shots of local buses and trams of the three companies that operate in the Stockholm County region taken in 2005 and 2006.

The most recent vehicles are Volvo B9SA, which have got to be the biggest waste of space I have come across as a bus!

Sweden - Stockholm 2007/2008 (373 images)

Another collection from Stockholm, taken in during various visits in 2007 and 2008. One visit was January and as this is the middle of winter, many shots were taken in the dark.

Of particular interest (well, to some anyway) are shots of two preserved SL Atlanteans, one of which operates a shuttle service between the museum and Slussen Tunnelbana station.

There are also buses from Oslo operating in Stockholm on Underground replacement services.

Sweden - Stockholm 2009 (163 images)

Back to Stockholm in April 2009 and Arriva are now operating under contract to SL.

It doesn't seem to have taken long for things to be converted to the "Arriva way" with buses displaying paper in the window instead of a destination display, branded vehicles on the wrong route, vehicle shortages etc, etc. Still, it is only a 5 year contract . . . . Also note that the livery of vehicles Arriva has drafted in is incorrect and some have Arriva fleetnames which is not permissable, although many others have had them (roughly) removed. They have also been very slow at fitting new fleetnumbers to the acquired fleet.

The Atlantean is still running on the museum shuttle and the vintage trams were out in force.

Busslink have introduced 30 x 13,7m MAN NL313 onto Stockholm city services, which are great buses. Unfortunately this means that MaxCis, for so long the backbone of the city fleet, are moving elsewhere.

Sweden - Stockholm Bus Dealer 2007 (29 images)

A collection of photos taken during a visit to a Bus Dealer on the outskirts of Stockholm in October 2007. Quite a varied collection and nothing looked as if it needed welding before onward movement!!!
